Using the right words when talking to prospective customers mean getting the sale or not getting the sale.  A simple word change can make a world of difference in the customer’s head.

To get an idea what I’m talking about, I’ll give you an example of a situation that happened a couple of years ago in my decorative concrete business.

While showing a potential customer several sample boards of different textures and colors that she could have on the concrete surface of her pool deck, I showed her one particular sample and I called it a “slop-down texture”.  She didn’t care at all for it and I continued to show her other samples.

A little bit later, I looked around her kitchen and told her I could see the look that she was going for in her kitchen and it would look great outside on her pool deck as well.  I said it she had a sort of “Tuscan” theme going on in the kitchen and as I pulled-out a sample that she had already looked at a few minutes earlier, I said that this “Tuscan Slate” application might be the perfect look for her pool area.

She immediately said, “I love it – I love Tuscan” and she was sold.  So much so that she grabbed the phone (right in front of me) and called my competition (that was scheduled to stop by later in the day) and cancelled her appointment!

This was the same sample I called “Slop-Down” earlier – she loved it only when I gave it a different name!

Like I said, use the right words, make more money!

Making extra money is obviously something that everyone would like to do  – right?  When the economy is bad (like it have been for the last several years), you’ve got to approach things a little differently than people have done in the past.

If you’ve suffered a job loss and your “personal economy” has been looking bleak, maybe putting all your hopes and dreams into one particular online business might not be such a good idea (you should at least have money coming-in from somewhere else while you hone your online skills).  Contrary to many of the “get-rich-quick” claims out there, making a living online is not exactly a quick endeavor.

You should however, start doing something online, whether it’s building a web site that builds larger and larger traffic numbers, or if its promoting an offline business in your hometown – there just is not anything out there that can pull in income-producing traffic (for such a low cost) as good as a well built and thought-out website!

At one time, when the internet was new, you could put up just about any crappy site and make money at it with various advertising formats (you basically had no competition).  The search engines were not that picky about which sites they “promoted” to the top on page one for for the various keywords and search terms that people happened to type into their search box.

Google and the the other search engines (Bing, Yahoo, Ask), are getting smarter with smarter algorithms.  As the search engine spiders come and crawl your site looking to see what your pages and posts are about in their never-ending quest for the correct keywords rankings, they are now looking to see if your site truly deserves to be on that coveted page one of the search results.  This means, crappy sites  (with more advertisements than content) are going to take a hit and be pushed back in the rankings.

Things change, and so must you – if you don’t, you get left in the dust wondering what exactly happened.
